Dual Language
Spanish Immersion
Winecoff Elementary School is a vibrant learning community dedicated to fostering academic excellence and cultural enrichment. Our Dual Immersion Spanish program offers students the unique opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate, and culturally aware preparing them for a globally connected future, while achieving high academic success. The program is supported by a diverse team of talented educators from Spanish-speaking countries such as Argentina, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, who bring their rich cultures and linguistic expertise to our classrooms. This diversity not only enhances the learning experience but also celebrates the beauty of multiculturalism within our school community.
Our Dual Language model is structured to best support language development at each grade level:
Kindergarten & 1st Grade – 90/10 Model
In these early years, 90% of their daily instruction is in Spanish language and 10% in English. This strong immersion helps students develop solid language foundations, confidence, and natural fluency. Research shows that this early exposure supports deeper language acquisition, strong literacy skills, and long-term academic success. English instruction gradually increases as students grow.
2nd Grade through 5th Grade – 50/50 Model
From second grade on, instruction is balanced with 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. This model strengthens students’ academic skills in both languages, promotes biliteracy, and supports higher-level thinking. Students continue developing strong reading, writing, and communication skills while mastering grade-level content in both languages.
Benefits of Our Dual Language Program Include:
• Bilingualism and biliteracy
• Strong academic achievement
• Improved cognitive and problem-solving skills
• Cultural awareness and empathy
• Preparation for future academic and career opportunities
How Families Can Support Learning at Home (Even If You Don’t Speak the Language):
You do not need to speak Spanish to support your child’s success. Simple and effective ways to help include:
• Reading with your child daily in English or your home language
• Talking about school and encouraging your child to explain what they learned
• Supporting homework routines, organization, and effort
• Encouraging your child to “teach” you what they are learning
• Showing positive interest and excitement about bilingual learning
Your encouragement and involvement make a powerful difference in your child’s success.
